seldom/ever

the best in digital ephemera, since 2010

To be modern is to find ourselves in an environment that promises us adventure, power, joy, growth, transformation of ourselves and the world - and at the same time that threatens to destroy everything we have, everything we know, everything we are…

Ten years ago (my god) I took a trip out to Maui with a couple friends. We spent much of the week cruising long highways through breezy cane fields, listening to Danny Tenaglia’s brilliant installment of the ‘Back to Mine’ compilation series. Consequently, for me all the songs now have an indelibly tropical air to them. Especially this little number by two of my favorite people in the world, Dani Siciliano and Matthew Herbert.

The song builds gently with a loopy, almost dizzily syncopated cadence, Siciliano cooing in her signature dreamlike style. It’s dark and mysterious and takes me back to a place and a time, as only the best songs can. Enjoy.

No experience has made me long for the outdoors quite like Summer in Manhattan. Scorching days and sticky nights stacked one on top of another like some sort of steamy space time continuum. This is the time of year that I start pining for the dusty …

No experience has made me long for the outdoors quite like Summer in Manhattan. Scorching days and sticky nights stacked one on top of another like some sort of steamy space time continuum. This is the time of year that I start pining for the dusty Ponderosa forests and ice cold mountain lakes of the the Sierra Nevada of my youth. So it was with great delight last Summer that I stumbled upon Cold Splinters, a blog written by fellow New Yorker, one Mr. Jeffrey Thrope.

Summer in the city is about being outside. It’s about babies and dogs, delicious food and epic evenings, each one better than the last.

48 hours, 26 miles, 7 peaks, 0 bear attacks (1 claw sighting). We danced with the devil and won.

Ghostly International, the quintessentially modern dance label out of Michigan, only gets better with time. Born out of the post-motown, post-techno sonic rubble of a crumbling, millenial Detroit (if not in body then at least in spirit - the label calls Ann Arbor home), imbued with an unshakable DIY ethos and wildly prolific in not just music but all areas of design, they’re the archetypal new media company.

They’ve embraced the distribution realities of 21st century music production and foraged ahead with a creative vigor that has cemented their legacy as one of the most dynamic and respected “labels” in existence. I could not be a bigger fan.

In their words:

Ghostly International is a multi-platform cultural curator, a tightly knit aesthetic universe fulfilling the roles of art gallery, design house, clothing designer, technology innovator, music-publishing company—and, yes, record label—in one…

To define Ghostly International would only be to limit it. Always evolving, always incorporating new sounds and new facets to its cultural identity, Ghostly still maintains its bottom line: to bring great art to people with open eyes and open ears.

Visit them, and visit often.

Yeah right.
